Migraine is a type of repetitive headache characterized by unilateral pulsating pain followed by nausea, vomiting and sensitivity to light and/or loud sounds. Two main types of migraines are: migraine with aura and migraine without aura. Migraines affects 8-12% of the world's population and represent a great public health problem because they decrease quality of life by causing pain, disabling an individual and affecting emotional, social and economical aspects of an individual. The quality of life of people with migraines is also decreased by comorbid disorders such as depression, anxiety, chronic pain, cardiovascular diseases, etc. The treatment of migraines is provided by using pharmacological therapy however, acupuncture is being used more often than before. Acupuncture is mostly used as prophylaxis although, it can also be used as acute therapy for nausea and vomiting caused by migraines. Treatments are provided throughout the period of 5 to 8 weeks. Acupuncture increases the quality of life by relieving pain which enables individuals to do their everday activities. The effects of acupuncture last for up to 12 months after the end of treatment.
