Intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy is abnormalitiy of the liver function during pregnancy. The main symptom is a generalized itching, accompanied by elevated levels of aminotransferase, bile acids and bilirubin in serum and rarely jaundice. It is a disorder of the orderly flow of bile through the biliary system most likely provoked by the hormones progesterone and estrogen. Since there is no cure for this condition it is vital to regulary monitor fetus and pregnant women. Healing comes down to relieve the symptoms, and the pregnancy is completed when the fetal lungs reach maturity. This study shows in details the problems of cholestasis in pregnancy and medical and midwifery interventions to eliminate or alleviate symptoms. About 20% of all pregnancies are in group of risk pregnancies. Cholestatic pregnancy is considered risk pregnancy. In such pregnancies are expected higher percentage of maternal and fetal complications, so these pregnancies require more frequent control than regular pregnancy. Pregnant women should be fully informed about their condition in order to making the best possible decisions for the child and her. She should be familiar with high risk of such pregnancy and increased risk for recurrence in subsequent pregnancies.
