Tracheostomy is a procedure in which the patency of the airways is ensured. Reduced patency of the airways in children can occurdue to various causes, for example, chronic respiratory obstruction, neurological or congenital diseases of the heart and lungs and the need for mehanical ventilation. Tracheostomy in children is performed surgically and its insertion can be short-term or long-term, which is closely related to the underlying disease that the child has. The nurse is an integral part of the team that takes care of the child before the placement of the tracheostomy. Nurse contributes during the placement itself and actively cares for the child after the tracheostomy until the moment of discharge from the hospital. Removing the cannula spontaneously closes the tracheostomy. It depends on the course of the disease and the restoration of patency of the tracheobronhial tree. Going home is decided on a case by case basis, when doctors and nurses assess the readiness and when the parents feels ready and safe for self-care of their child. Life in a family, despite all the difficulties, enables the best quality of life and the highest level of happiness for the child and his parents.
