Abstract (english) Objectives: The goal of this research is to examine the level of sexual responsibility amongst female population aged 20 to 25 and to examine frequency of sexually transmitted diseases amongst the same population. In this thesis, we have especially highlighted the role of midwife as an educator and promoter of the health education and the importance of educating the young toward prevention of sexually transmitted diseases and consequently infertility.
Subjects and methods: The research has been anonymously conducted on the sample of 115 female students aged 20 to 25, in University campus called "dr. Franjo Tuđman" in Split. The questionnaire contained 8 structured-type questions. The research is organized as a cross-sectional study.
Results: According to conducted questionnaires the following results were obtained. On the sample of 115 female respondents, one third was not sexually active. Of total 82 sexually active respondents, 57 of them had one sexual partner during the period of one year. Condoms and coitus interrupts were usually used as contraceptive methods. Respondents usually went to gynecologist due to regular Pap smear or the symptoms of vaginal infection, and rarely due to conversation or education. It has been found that respondents who were not sexually active usually went to gynecologist due to absence of menstruation (amenorrhea), and those who had two or more sexual partners per year, went due to possible vaginal infection. Also, significant data is that respondents who know the link between vaginal infection and infertility report to the gynecologist. Respondents agree on poor education regarding sexually transmitted diseases and their consequences in middle school and high school, and they also agree on the question of independent education on the same matter, which is usually Internet.
Conclusion: Most of the student respondents are very responsible and conscientious about sexual responsibility, but there is still a certain number of respondents who are not educated enough when it comes to sexual responsibility. Due to that, the role of midwife as a promoter of health education and reproductive health is emphasized. We consider how systematically there is no sufficient care about reproductive health, communication and education of adolescents and the young about sexual education, importance and proper use of all types and forms of contraception and inflammation of female reproductive system and complications in terms of STD. It is important to underline the disheartening fact that most of the respondents educate themselves about sexuality and related topics via Internet, communication with older, more experienced friends, but insufficiently with educated health experts. Because of that, we stress the need for better systematic organization of care for adolescents and young adults for safe sexual behavior, so they can have the possibility for free and anonymous testing for infectious STD, as well as communication and education about that with health experts, apropos midwife.
