Acute pancreatitis is an inflammatory disease of the pancreas. The most common cause of acute pancreatitis is gallstone and alcohol abuse. The revised Atlanta classification provides, three based severity clasification and new uniform terminology regarding complications of pancreatitis. Complications of acute pancreatitis may result in local or systemic problems. Severe disease is characterized by a significant systemic inflammatory response which may be associated with varying degrees of organ dysfunction. The mortality in patients with multi-organ failure may be as high as 50%. Local complications follow a progression from pancreatic/peripancreatic fluid collections to pseudocysts and from pancreatic/peripancreatic necrosis to walled-off necrosis that typically occur over the course of a four week interval. Recent clinical practice guidelines provide recommendations to key aspects of medical and surgical management of acute pancreatitis. Theya are the results of an international, multidisciplinary, evidence-based approach. Clinical practice guidelines are designed to standardize treatment plans and help healthcare providers to make informed clinical decisions Regarding to guedelines recommandation early management strategies are mostly suportive and should aim to prevent or treat organ failure and to reduce infectious complications. The management of infected pancreatic necrosis has historically been based on early, open necro-sectomy, associated with significant mortality. In recent years, an evidence based transformation has occurred towards the step-up approach of invasive treatment of local complication. Step-up treatment consisting of percutaneous catheter drainage, followed by minimally invasive necrosectomy. In the management of acute pancreatitis, nursing care can often overlap with medical management, especially as the condition get worsen. Therefore, it is important that nurses develop comprehensive knowledge of the management of acute pancreatitis
