Objective: The main objective of this study was to determine the level of health literacy of students at the University of Split considering the type of study and the age and gender of the subjects. Methods and subjects: 270 students from eight components at the University of Split participated in this research. The used instrument is a newly constructed questionnaire for determining the level of health literacy formed of open-ended and closed-ended questions divided into five categories: drug use and treatment; health education; first aid; body dysfunction and the structure and function of the human body. Other variables used in this study are gender and age of subject and name, type and year of study. Results: The outcome of the research indicates a satisfactory level of health literacy of students at the University of Split, judging that the total calculation of correctly solved answers was 68.36% with most correct answers in body dysfunction category and the least correct answers in the first aid category. A statistically significant difference was found between students of health and non-health studies in 21 measurement variables, where students of health studies showed a higher level of health literacy. There is no statistically significant difference considering age or sex of the subjects. Conclusions: Health study students show a higher level of health literacy than non-health study students, however, there is no statistically significant differences in the level of health literacy considering age or sex of the subjects.
